Following Kennel Club recognition of the breed in 1932, the first scheduled show was the Richmond Championship Show, where fourteen dogs were entered with Best of Breed going to Mrs. Fagan's 'Smudge', a dark grizzle and tan prick-ear (also described as black-backed by Mrs. Fagan ). There were no Challenge Certificates on offer for the breed and the judge, Mr. Ernest Hertz who replaced the indisposed Colonel Phipps, commented, "A big future exists for this breed. The outstanding specimen was Smudge, carrying his six years lightly. Hats off to the sponsors of this charming breed; may their efforts bring success." and "was described as a very attractive little dog with a character and style that made him appear to be a member of a distinct variety and by no means nondescript, being sound, sturdy and alert. He was the only one of the Breed of that color, the remainder all being reds.". Smudge, a grandson of Mrs. Fagan's foundation bitch,'Brownie', later became an important sire. Born in 1925, Smudge was a singleton puppy with no full siblings. His inbreeding coefficient was too low to measure. There were no half siblings on his dam's side and only one on his sire's side.
Smudge was bred only six times, 4 of the breedings to Peggoty, for a total of 9 offspring, one of which was the first prick ear Champion bitch, Miss Manette and one Mrs. Rodwell's drop ear Champion Airman's Brown Smudge. One of the 5 founding sires Smudge was a direct descendant of Jones' Terriers, Smudge was a natural prick ear but carried the drop ear gene.
