Best wishes to members Sandra Stemmler, Robert Tant and Patsy Wade for a speedy recovery and a healthy holiday! Members accomplished a lot toward organization our 2012 specialty at the Dallas meeting. Applicants Luke Coppedige and Melissa Dietz were approved for full membership and Luke has agreed to relieve Erwin Davenport as Chair of Meet The Breeds. Our primary raffle for this year will be TWO Kindle Fires so that each ticket allows for two chances to win a Kindle Fire. Thanks to Robin Coppedge for coordinating this and for your generous donation! The Puppy Social, chaired by Patsy Wade will be offered on Thu. of the specialty weekend and Meet The Breeds will be moved to Fri. of the specialty weekend.

From Member Beth Kravetz:
We went to the Alamo Area Whippet Club Lure Coursing Ability Test (in Hutto, TX) and both girls passed.  It was a really fun event; everyone very supportive.  I got there early and watched the hounds run the real course (600 yards or more) and THAT was fascinating.  After the regular trial, they used the same course for the non-hounds; the way they have it is two half-courses (more or less) together and so the dogs run both large and small, one after the other.  There were many different breeds represented – maybe 30 in all – the terriers were in the majority (my two Norfolks, two Scotties, two Sealys, a bunch of rat terriers and Rusells – and a Golden, a Giant Schnauzer, a couple of Dobies, a Vizsla, two Frenchies, a couple of Border Collies, a Brittany).  I would say most of the dogs qualified (maybe 8 did not).  It’s strictly a pass/fail system where the judging is based upon continual interest and pursuit of the lure over the course (300 yards for small [under 12”] and 600 yards for the rest) in the time allowed (90 seconds for small and 180 seconds for large [I think]).

Congratulations to new member Robin Coppedge and her son Luke who attended their first Montgomery County weekend and showed their own dogs. We're proud of their accomplishemnts and here are their wins for the two days of competition:

MJ- Nightingales High Flyer was 4th in the 9-12 month puppy class on Sunday at Montgomery Co. Luke was showing her. I was really pleased.
Mj was 3rd in the swweepstakes and Charlee, Nightingales Charlee Hustle, was 4th in Sweepstakes. (9-12 month).

Congratulations to Laurie Vitale's Am. Int. Ch. Woodland's Bear In Mind who celebrated his 15th birthday yesterday. A son of the famous Eng./Am. Ch. Nanfan Culver, "Bentley" was #2 in the country when he was being shown and continues to be heart healthy, significant for any breed of dog that reaches his age.

Welcome to our new members, Robin Coppedge and Sue Lawrence. Robin has supported our specialties for 3 years and is already taking on the job of Ways and Means - yea Robin!! Sue is the President of our sister club in Michigan and we welcome her to our "family" of Norfolk lovers.

Kathy Kopack has agreed to take the important job of Public Relations and Advertising - thank you, Kathy!!

Thanks to the generosity and support of our members who actively worked and donated to our specialty weekend, everyone went away with a smile and warm memories. Three bitches completed their championships over the weekend and majors held every day. The raffle and auction were successful, earning enough to cover our specialty expenses and operating expenses for the coming year - whew!!

The heart clinic coordinated by Marion Hovet was an enormous success. We plan to extend the clinic next year to include additional CHIC exams and the all-breed clubs and the Lone Star Norwich Terrier Club are interested in taking part.

The Van Andel Research Institute, a world class human cancer research
institute, recently received a Federally fund grant through the National
Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, to study five types of
cancer that occur in both dogs and humans. The ultimate goal is to develop
improved diagnostics and more individualized therapies for both canines and
people.

We are requesting the help of purebred dog owners, who may own a dog
affected with one of these cancers. The five initial cancers we are studying

are:

1) Hemangiosarcoma
2) Lymphoma
3) Osteosarcoma
4) Malignant histiocytosis
5) Melanoma of the mouth or toe

We are requesting fresh (NOT in formalin, NOT frozen) tissue samples from
tumors, when pets have biopsies, surgeries such as splenectomies, or are
euthanized. Samples may be collected post mortem, as the euthanasia
solution does not affect the DNA in either the dog's blood or in the tumor
cells.

Additionally, if you have a dog with one of these cancers who has already
been treated (splenectomy, chemo, etc), we would still appreciate a blood
sample along with a histopath report confirming the diagnosis. We need 3-5
mls of whole blood in an EDTA (purple top) tube. It can be sent priority
mail, and blood can be shipped at room temperature.

If the pet is scheduled for surgery or, sadly, euthanasia, if you or your
veterinarian contact us ahead of time, we can FedEx a collection kit which
includes an overnight FedEx return shipping form, along with collection
media and containers.

Owner consent forms and veterinary info pages can be found on our website,
at:

http://www.vai.org/helpingdogs

I will be happy to answer any questions I can, as well. Owners,
veterinarians and researchers working together will help us to unravel some
of the mysteries of these nasty diseases.

The first specialty for The Bluebonnet Norfolk Terrier Club has concluded and was hugely successful. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all of you who attended and supported our specialty. We enjoyed majors for every show in the cluster and thank all those who helped keep those majors together for the benefit of all the exhibitors.

Gloria Geringer did an oustanding job on her Sweepstakes entry and what a great hand she has on these puppies! Gloria obviously loves the breed and we appreciated her taking on this last minute assignment in the abscence of Marjorie McTernan.

Larry Adams took control of his assignment of the regular classes with knowledge and enthusiasm. Everyone appreciated his thorough judging of the entry and his comments at the banquet Saturday evening.

Special thanks go to Denise Faulkner for her donation of original Norfolk Terrier drawing and prints and to Kelly Levon for the hand made soaps; Robert and Kathy Tant for the standards and club banners; and to Bianca (Execustive Chef for Lucianno's) for donating the room charge for our banquet and providing the fabulous meal and service. Sandra Stemmler donated a number of great auction items, among them a designer tote that had Claire Johnson's name on it (if you know Claire, you KNOW how she loves bags!!).

A more complete report on the specialty will be forthcoming.

A little bird told us that Marjorie McTernan is recovering at home and almost back to her mischievous self :)

Tally Ho-Ho-Ho, CGC, ME, OA, OAJ, MXP, MJP, NFP
Miss B Bingley, CGC, NA, OAJ We were signed up for a 3-day agility seminar with Stuart Mah (at a training place in Dripping Springs, about 2 ½ hours from my place in Texas), but only as an auditor.  Stuart works continuously without a break for 9 straight hours, and although he had some useful information and training styles/systems to convey, 9 hours of so of sitting on my keester, and my dogs in the X-pen, was too much for me and not all that helpful.  So, I bailed after 1 day and went to the second day of a dock diving competition (in College Station.…a lot of Texas real estate was traversed this weekend!) where Bingley got her first 3 NATIONAL title qualifying legs and was third in the lapdog division finals (I won’t say how many dogs were in the finals!)  She had her personal best jump of 4 feet 1 inch, up from her maiden (regional competition) jump in November of 3 feet 10 inches.  She is getting more confident about jumping into that big pool!  She now has 3 (of 5) regional qualifying legs and 3 (of 5) national qualifying legs.  I’m hoping to get both a National novice dock dog and Regional novice dock dog titles on her this summer.  She would be the first Norfolk with a National title, I think.  (Marian Shaw of Spring Cove Kennel in Maryland has the other dock diving Norfolk (Noel) and Noel was the first Norfolk to get ANY dock diving title, a regional one.  So…. Something for us to aim for!!)
